Taking care of patients' medical needs in a hospital is paramount. If you find yourself short-handed with nurses, lab technicians, or even janitorial services, you may find that the hospital is unable to run on an efficient schedule. If you are on the hospital administrative team, you know that it is necessary to find staff when necessary to increase the amount of full-time or part-time workers that you have. Here is a three-step plan that you should implement in the event that you find yourself shorthanded on hospital workers.
Go with a staffing agency
Creating a relationship with a staffing agency or two that only operates for hospital workers is one of the best decisions that you can make. A hospital staffing agency will have the names of nurses, lab workers, hospital administrative assistants, and other medical care workers in their roles. Some may be interested in a full- or part-time position while others may be available but without a long-term commitment. If you find yourself in need of more workers, give one of the staffing agencies a call and let them know the types of workers that you will need and for how long. This way you will be able to find workers who can step in and fill the healthcare gaps in your hospital.
Develop ongoing orientation
Orientation is important as you must know that all of your workers are aware of the laws that govern their positions. Hospital staff will also need to know the personal rules of your hospital and how the department that they will work in operates. Instead of having to schedule an orientation for each newly reporting worker, designate an orientation department and hold ongoing orientation. An orientation that is scheduled to begin a few days out of every week and run down the rules and regulations of the hospital will make assigning temps and new hires easier.
Make one person the designated shadow in each department
All new entries will need a person to shadow in their department until they can get the hang of the ropes. Even doctors may operate in pairs for a while until they get comfortable with hospital procedures. Have one person designated as the shadow for all new people who come into the department. This person should be properly trained on all hospital regulations and requirements and should be interested in being in a teaching position.
