When your baby has a fever it can cause you to panic, especially if you are a first-time mother or father. However, there are some instances where there is no need to be too alarmed and there are others where you definitely should be. Let's take a look at each so you can know when to call a baby doctor, and when you can handle things on your own.
Confirming the Fever
The best way to confirm that your baby has a fever is to use a thermometer. The most accurate way to take your baby's temperature is rectally. If the temperature is over one hundred degrees Fahrenheit you should call your pediatrician. A fever, while unnerving, is a sign that your baby's body is fighting off an infection. Here is a short list of illnesses that your baby's body may be fighting.
- colds
- sore throat
- meningitis
- ear infections
- influenza
Stay in close contact with your doctor so that your baby can be diagnosed quickly.
How to Take Care of Your Baby
Find out from your baby's doctor if you can give your baby some acetaminophen or ibuprofen. After almost an hour you will find that the fever is reduced by a few degrees. The next step is to give your baby a sponge bath that is lukewarm. You should also use a cooling fan to get the fever down. Give your baby extra fluids, as a fever can cause dehydration. If you notice that your child's mouth is dry or they have less wet diapers, then your child is dehydrated.
When You May Need to Go to the Hospital
You need to call your pediatrician if you notice that your baby starts vomiting, has diarrhea, or unexplained rashes. In some cases seizures can occur. Seizures that are triggered by a fever are called febrile seizures and they tend to run in families. When these seizures occur you will notice that your baby begins to twitch and they will usually begin to roll their eyes before becoming unresponsive. You may also notice that your baby's skin color darkens. While these episodes can be frightening, they often do not result in long term health problems. However, they should be reported to your doctor as soon as they occur.
A fever can be disturbing but these things are part of childhood. The key is to stay calm whenever your baby has a fever and do what is necessary to keep them comfortable. Call your pediatrician if you want to administer medication or if you see anything that indicates more serious symptoms arising.
